Restaurant Expectations – A Semi-Rant

My wife and I have different ideas about how to rate a restaurant.  She likes the mood, the decor, the service and lastly the food.  I, on the other hand, go for the food.  I go there to have really good if not great food.  I want to learn something from the chef, I want to be impressed, basically I want that “OMG” moment.  I want to be disappointed when I finish, not by the food but because I have woofed it down and there is no more.

Maybe I am a little jaded.  When I cook something, whether it be for my wife or for 15 people, I know when I place it on the table that I have done my very best to make it a memorable meal.  I won’t serve something that I am not proud of.

I guess what set me off on this tangent was a recent meal we had at a local cafe.  They claimed to inspired by the Mediterranean lifestyle, maybe that meant “laid back”.  The food was lackluster and bland with no imagination at all.  Look, I am not a food snob, I will go out for “just a burger”, but I expect the cook to put his all into that burger.  I want the burger he would serve if he were cooking it for his grandmother.

One more word and then I will go peacefully… please remember to tip the wait staff, even if the meal is bad.  It was not their fault and if they tried to make the meal memorable then they did their job.

I agree with you 100% and chef must put everything they have got for guests. Though I am not a chef but I appreciate dedicated and creative chefs. this is my ranting for the day.
